The sonic screwdriver was more used in the modern series than in the classical series by the new producers, but some people said that it was a deus et machina and they didn't like it. Some of the new things that it can do are control remotely the TARDIS, give universal roaming to mobile phones and unable alien costume.
In Smith and Jones it is used to amplify the radiation of a X-ray machine and it breaks the sonic screwdriver, at the end he got another one.
In the episode The Eleventh Hour, the Doctor gets a new and larger sonic screwdriver, in A Christmas Carol the Doctor tells young Kazran to pursue his love, because in a similar situation he didn't do it and tried to "design a new kind of sonic screwdriver", also during this episode it is broken in two pieces, one finishes inside a shark and the other one is left to Kazran, because the Doctor has got copies of it. During this episode, the screwdriver tries to join itself.
In Let's Kill Hitler, they say that the sonic screwdriver does what you think and press the button, in previous versions, it had different settings. In The Day of the Doctor, they say that all the sonic screwdrivers from all the different Doctors uses the same software, which allows to do long calculations from one sonic screwdriver to another one. The War Doctor doesn't like how the Tenth and the Eleventh Doctor use their sonic screwdrivers.
Laser screwdriver: It is the Master's screwdriver, it is used as a weapon and it is isomorphic, which means that only the Master can use it.
Sonic pen: The alien nurse from Adipose 3 has got one, when she and the Doctor aim their devices to each other they make an horrible noise that allows the Doctor to scape.
Sonic blaster: Jack Harckess has got one in The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances, some seasons later, River Song has got the same one in Silence in the Library and The Forest of Dead.
River Song has got a future version of the Doctor's screwdriver.
Sonic cane: The Doctor uses it in Let's kill Hitler.
Sonic probe: Amy Pond made it herself in The Girl Who Waited.
Sonic modulator: Toshiko Sato, in the spin-off Torchwood, makes it to change it for her mother.
